The U.S. Labor Department Bureau of Labor Statistics has released preliminary May unemployment figures, not seasonally adjusted.

Two Northeast Wisconsin metropolitan areas, Appleton and Green Bay, saw unchanged unemployment rates between April and May, and two, Fond du Lac and Oshkosh–Neenah, saw slight drops in unemployment rates.

The only Northeast Wisconsin metro area with higher unemployment between April and May was Sheboygan, where the unemployment rate grew from 9.2 percent to 9.5 percent.

Wisconsin’s May unemployment rate of 8.7 percent was less than the national unemployment rate of 9.1 percent.

Unemployment rates from May 2008 and April and May 2009:
Appleton: 3.8%, 8.6%, 8.6%.
Fond du Lac: 3.9%, 9%, 8.9%.
Green Bay: 4.1%, 8.4%, 8.4%.
Oshkosh–Neenah: 3.9%, 8.1%, 8%.
Sheboygan: 3.7%, 9.2%, 9.5%.
Wisconsin: 4.2%, 8.8%, 8.7%.

The unemployment figures seem very gloomy. Hope to see some light at the end of the tunnel.
